Department Head's message

The changes that are taking place in the world and in our region, especially the rise of non-Western civilizations, challenge us to understand better what is this Western civilization that we are so interested in defending? The Classics, of course, are the starting point. Classical authors had a tremendous formative role in the development of this civilization, especially through students of the classics such as Maimonides, Al-Farabi, Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli, Galileo, Hobbes, Adam Smith, J. –J. Rousseau, John Locke, Nietzsche, Heidegger and others. What was it about the classics that held such a profound interest and worked such a strong influence on these thinkers? We cannot promise that everyone who graduated from our department will have the grasp of a Nietzsche, but any serious student will find worlds of thought about man and society that are more relevant today than ever.
